Our second Photo Challenge is... Fill the Frame!
In this challenge we will be learning to move closer to our subjects and fill the frame with them. We often take photos where our subjects only take up a small fraction of the photo and the viewers are left wondering what the subject is and instead focus on other elements of the photo that were not our intentions. To get rid of the distractions we will leave nothing in the frame but what we want our viewers to be looking at.
In the above example you can move the slider to see before and after. My original image has my subject front and center yet the eye is drawn to all of the stuff in the background. When I fill the frame however, there is no doubt what my subject is, and although it is not the whole subject, it is still what I am interested in.
The Challenge
To create images where your subject fills the frame. Leave little to no space around them. Create images where your subject is spilling off the edges of the photo.
Bonus: Take a photo of your subject the way you naturally would and include it with your fill the frame submissions. If the before and after photos are the same orientation then I will post them like the example above with a slider so we can see the difference filling the frame makes.
I'm excited to see your your submissions and how we do.
Start Date: March 29th 2018 - April 12th 2018 :End Date
Tips:
- Try getting as close to your subject as your camera will allow you to and still focus properly.
- Try different angles of the same subject to see how the subject changes when filling the frame.
- Try keeping your focal length fixed, either with a prime lens or just keeping your focal length the same on a zoom lens and using your feet to zoom
- Try to get shots that you don't have to crop in editing to fill the frame.
- Try different aperture settings for the same shot.
- If you have different lenses, try them to see the different results.
- Try taking photos of your subjects the way you naturally would and then get closer and fill the frame.
Add your own creative twist and experiment.
P.S. These challenges are just for fun and to push us to get out there and take photos, while hopefully gaining some new insights into photography.
Have fun!
